How to make decisions with your child’s other parent or guardian.

When parents separate, they will need to plan for how they will continue to care for their children. Parenting matters generally involve two main areas: parenting time and decision-making.

Parenting time refers to the time a child spends in the care of each parent or guardian. Parenting arrangements can look different for every family and should be based on what is in the best interests of the child.

Decision-making refers to the responsibility for making important decisions about a child’s life. This can include decisions about where the child will live, their education, religion and cultural upbringing, and their medical and mental health care. Depending on the circumstances, parents may share responsibility for these decisions or certain decisions may be made by one parent
